I’ve been asked a few times in the last day and a half if I was getting excited about my trip. Honestly, the answer is no. I don’t really know how to describe it, I’m…….nothing. Prepared?, curious?Relaxed? I really can’t describe it other than I think I’m heading toward where I was hoping to go. I don’t mean for this to be dark, quite the contrary, this, I think, this will be the forced break Ive hoped it would be. If I’m a bit pensive in this musing it’s because I just found out that my friend I mentioned in my first post has been placed in hospice.
Now Darrel has in my opinion, as best as anyone can in this day and time, lived life pretty much on his own terms, coming about as close to a decent work life balance as one can, for which I’ve always admired and respected him because that is not an easy thing to do. Darrel, likes Corvettes, hes owned several over the years, a big St. Louis Cardinals fan (a shared passion) and has always enjoyed wild salmon fishing out West. He was just on the cusp of hanging it up for good when life threw him this curve.
Dear readers, hopefully over the next several days we are going to get to enjoy together this trek that I am embarking on, but, if that is all that we take away from this we will have missed the greater point. That being the acknowledgment that it is incumbent on each of us to make the most of this gift of life that has been given to us. While I am completely, and miserably, incapable of speaking with any authority on matters such as this, I cannot help but believe that, by revelling in whatever is positive in each moment that is given to us, we can at least be able to say we did our best to make as much out of this gift as we could, much as my friend has. Que Dios este contingo mi amigo (may God be with you my friend).
Thank you for this indulgence. Next post from Espana
So sorry to hear about your friend Lou. This is a remarkable journey you are embarking on and it sounds as though he would be your biggest cheerleader. Safe travels my friend!
