Day 1 Bowness on Solway to Burgh by the Sands

Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” – Seneca

So a brilliant morning bright sunshine, temps in the low fifties wind out of the West (at our backs which will I think become more important as we move on) with gust around 20. In other words, perfect hiking weather. We are truly hiking from coast to coast as can be seen the photo below:

Tidal Plain

The Irish Sea is just out of the shot to the left behind some trees. Across the plain is Scotland.

The beginning of the trek is the Maia Roman fort. Unfortunately the fort was taken by the sea centuries ago but a pavilion has been erected near the site of the fort.

Maia pavilion

Just for the record my poker buddy and hiking cohort, Rich Wemstrom, took a picture of me at the pavilion.

Fortunately, the phone did not melt as my photo was taken, so, we were off.

Prevailing view

This view was pretty much our view for the days trek to the north. This area is subject to tidal flooding and hikers are cautioned to consult tide schedules. Fortunately our passage was at low tide.

A little way along the track, in Port Carlisle we met Roger Brough (pronounced Bruff) he explained that as a Brough rather than a Burgh (also pronounced Bruff) meant that his ancestors were sheep stealers and cattle thieves.

Roger is an enterprising individual who lives on the path and has constructed a sign post upon which, for a small donation can be placed your hometown and distance from Port Carlisle.

Again, the camera remained functioning lol.

Moving on we found a unique floral display at one home related to our trek.

Boot garden

As we moved along, we encountered several “kissing gates which allowed us to cross fields but kept livestock in though we did not encounter any livestock in the fields.

We then moved onto the road to Burgh alternating between the road and an abandoned rail bed

Yes it was that far

Rich hiking

We finally reached Burgh by the Sands the place where Edward the 1st passed while fighting Robert the Bruce for control of Scotland (the movie Braveheart was based on this fight for control) here is a statue of him.

Somehow that picture is missing so I’ll take it again tomorrow since there is where we will start. Till then
