In war, events of importance are the result of trivial causes – Julius Caesar
So before I continue with more pictures and commentary I’d like to make a few quick shout outs to my family, who has encouraged and supported me in this endeavor, with a special shout out to my hiking partner in TN, my son Stephen, who, without him joining me on our training treks, I doubt that I would have been in sufficient condition to make this happen. Thanks pal. Also my hiking compadres Mike and Melanie Salvino and Rich Wemstrom. As a group we worked together really well with good humor and friendship in abundance.
So, back to the fort with some more photos:

Though I was not able to take photos, one of the most amazing discoveries at Vindolanda has been the discovery of the “Vindolanda tablets” 1,400 documents or fragments of, ink on tablet. Two items of interest were a complete unit strength report of the fort sent to the local governor as well as an invitation to a birthday party for the fort commander sent by his wife to a very good friend, the wife of a commander at another fort. The documents are truly a fascinating look into life almost 2000 years ago.
From Vindolanda we went to the Roman Army Museum at Walltown Uk by way of the Twice Brewed Inn. Twice Brewed had a sense of humor as shown in the following photos:

Above are boot scrapers to be used before entering the pub in the middle photo my pack is on the bench to the left but the fun is the plaque in black and white. The Roman Army Museum is an excellent depiction of life for a Roman Legionaries with one 3D film and two other films, one with a recruiting Sargent inviting you to join the Roman Army and a third depicting life inside a Roman Army squad. No pics unfortunately. We asked but they are afraid people wouldn’t visit. I’ll make some general observations of folks in the UK later, the vast majority of which will be very positive. I have yet to have a problem striking up a conversation with a UK resident. All for now
