Day 2 Negreira to A Picota a foggy day but it’s not London town

So, there was supposed to only be a 7% chance of rain until 1400 but I woke up to this:

Rain 😑

So panchos/rain gear donned, our intrepid little band moved into the elements.

The first item of interest were the old city walls:

Southern gate to City
In the wall of the city
Leaving City Gate. Sunday market being set up in plaza to the right

Moving out of the city, a sign suggested a slightly longer alternative route along the river. We weren’t tired yet so we took it. Good move.

River walk
Nice path
Very clear water
Waterfall top left
Closer shot of falls

But all good things must come to an end so as we started upwards to catch the original path, the rain began in earnest.

Uphill not my favorite

While I’m sure there was very pretty scenery along the way, between the rain and fog we didn’t get to see much of it. Near the peak of our highest climb of the day the was a little cafe jammed with hikers.

Rain refugees

Everyone was soaking wet,as was their gear, and most were soaked not due to the rain but due to the sweat inside their rain gear. The body heat one generates while hiking is significant. I literally turned my pancho inside out and left a puddle of moisture on the pavement. More on the inside than out but I kept warm.

We finally reached the peak but couldn’t really see anything in the valley below.

No view of the valley
Distance marker just short of days summit

Finally done for the day we stayed at a cute family run hotel in A Picota, Casa Jurjo. The Galician soup (a mixture of broth, potatoes, beans, and cabbage, flavored with smoked pork) was a hot (literally served boiling in the bowl) and comforting delicious first course to end a cold wet day. As we were eating we realized we were being watched

Alien 👽 in the glass

They are among us 😂😂😂. Hopefully better weather tomorrow.

  1. Lou, your reference to ponchos reminded me of when we ran the last Retail Store Development Conference in Austin, with rain projected on the Store Tours day. So we headed out with Anne-Marie (in her car, complete with a Dutch-speaking GPS guide!) to find a Wal-Mart where we could buy ponchos for all the attendees. Hope you remember that…a fond memory for me.
