Churchill the artist

Winston Churchill began painting after the disastrous WW1 amphibious landing at Gallipoli where nearly 200,000 British casualties including 32,000 dead. The strategy was the brain child of Churchill and he went into a deep depression after it’s failure.

During a family holiday at a country estate prior to Chartwell, Churchill’s sister in law Gwendolyn (Goonie) Churchill, suggested he give it a try after he was watching her do a watercolor.

An early self portrait

Churchill quickly moved from watercolors to oils and loved bright colors and broad strokes.

Churchill never signed his paintings considering them to be mediocre daubs. Giving many away and selling just a few after being begged to do so.

His driver often placed WSC on paintings when they were sent out to be framed so that the framer would know who the painting belonged to.

With that we bid farewell to Chartwell and Sir Winston moving on to Leeds Castle. Cheers!
