
Leeds Castle has an interesting story. The first reference to a castle at this location is in the 12th century.

Interestingly enough the castle became part of a dower, or essentially a wedding present, from kings to their respective queens from the 12th through 16th centuries.

Though the castle was modernized in the 1930’s, more on that later, roughly half of the interior retains its Tudor characteristics from the time of Henry the 8th.



Cloth hangings were used in rooms both to add color and warm in the stoned walled rooms.

In 1520 a massive one month festival/tournament was held by Henry VIII and Francois I of France to improve relations between the two kingdoms (it didn’t work) Leeds Castle played a critical part in this tournament supplying a prodigious quantity of foodstuffs to the revelers such as:
And five hundred years later we were still living in wad and dabble huts.

I agree with you about moving from Tudor times to the 20th century. You are right, it probably wouldn’t have been maintained as well
